For anyone who is hurting and lacking peace today, I was looking at John 20 this morning when Mary Magdalene was just outside the tomb of Jesus crying on that Sunday morning after Jesus had died on Friday. Think about the hurt, the confusion, the fear, the images of Jesus’ dead body that didn’t even look human from the sacrifice He endured, all hope seemed lost.
The same Jesus that gave Mary hope and deliverance when He cast out demons is now dead and gone and the best that she could reason was that someone had robbed the tomb and taken Jesus’ body. Then as she stepped inside the tomb there were 2 angels sitting where Jesus’ body was laid asking her why she was crying, “because they have taken my Lord and I don’t know where they have put Him.”
She then turned and saw someone she thought was a gardener, but it was actually Jesus, who also asked her why she was crying; she asked Him to please let her know where the body of Jesus was…and then it happened. Jesus called her by name, “Mary,” and she knew it was Jesus. He was alive in victory by the power of God! There is hope!
Seeing and hearing from angels must have been pretty cool, but they couldn’t provide her with the hope that seeing and hearing from Jesus gave her. Think about what a beautiful and powerful moment it was that changed everything when she heard from Jesus. In that moment her tears of sorrow turned to tears of joy!
This same Jesus is available to you right now with a standing invitation, “Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). There is a real, living Savior waiting on you. Call to Him.
